The Manitou Dorado Expert is the air sprung, travel adjustable version of the inverted downhill fork that Talaria itself chose for the Sting R MX4 Expert, supplied here as a stand alone upgrade for the Sting MX3, the Sting R MX4 and the XXX. It brings a 37 mm chassis, the Dorado Air Spring with its self balancing negative chamber, an ABS+ damper with external low speed adjusters and a top drop crown suited to an electric dirt bike. This guide explains what each part does on a Talaria, how the Expert differs from the coil sprung Comp, and how to fit and set it up.
What you are buying
This listing is for one Manitou Dorado Expert fork in its current generation, the version built around a 37 mm chassis rather than the 36 mm legs of the previous Dorado. Manitou quotes a 20 percent gain in stiffness from that change alone. The fork ships with the top drop crown that Manitou recommends for electric bike installations, which places the upper crown lower on the legs and keeps the bar height sensible on a Talaria head tube.
Included in the box
- Manitou Dorado Expert fork, 37 mm chassis, air spring and ABS+ damper fitted
- Top drop upper crown, recommended by Manitou for electric bikes
- Lower crown and steerer assembly
- Manitou documentation with pressures, travel changes and torque figures
Tyres, brake hardware and the front wheel are not part of the fork. Your existing Talaria front wheel and disc carry across, and the fitment section below covers what to check before the swap. If you would rather buy a complete bike with this fork already fitted and set up, the Sting R MX4 Expert uses exactly this unit from the factory.

Why an inverted fork suits a Talaria
Most Talaria forks, standard and aftermarket, are inverted: the fat outer tubes clamp into the crowns and the slimmer inner legs move at the wheel. The Dorado is the design that made that layout credible in downhill racing, and the reasons it works there carry over to the Manitou Dorado Expert on a 60V electric dirt bike in rutted UK woodland.
Lubrication that never runs dry
Because the seals sit at the bottom of the outer legs, oil pools against them under gravity, so the bushings run through a bath rather than a film and the fork stays supple through a full day.
Stiffness where the front tyre needs it
An inverted chassis is markedly stiffer fore and aft, the direction in which braking and square edged hits load the fork, while staying compliant in torsion. A Talaria carries its mass low and central, so the front end is relatively light and easily deflected. The Manitou Dorado Expert resists that deflection under braking, and the torsional give lets the wheel find grip on off camber roots without transmitting every twist to the bars.
Bleed screws for long descents
Air trapped in the outer legs builds pressure as the fork warms and compresses, and that pressure acts like an extra spring you never asked for. The TSR bleed screws at the top of each leg release it in seconds without tools, a small feature that riders on long Welsh descents come to appreciate.
The Dorado Air Spring and travel options
The Manitou Dorado Expert is the air sprung Dorado. Its Dorado Air Spring contains a balancing valve that equalises the positive and negative chambers during the fill, so a single shock pump sets both. The result is a spring curve with no flat spot at the top of the stroke and no dead zone near the middle, the two faults that cheaper air forks suffer from when the negative chamber is guessed rather than matched.
Three travel settings, no spare parts
Travel is adjustable between 180 mm, 190 mm and 203 mm without buying spacers or a different spring assembly. That flexibility is the biggest practical advantage the Manitou Dorado Expert holds over the Comp. Run 180 mm for a lower front and quicker steering on trail loops, then move to 203 mm for a weekend at a downhill venue.
Setting sag by pressure
Air pressure sets the spring rate on the Manitou Dorado Expert, and the correct figure depends on rider weight in full kit, riding position and the Talaria model, because the XXX places the rider differently from the Sting. Manitou publishes a starting chart. Set pressure with the fork fully extended, cycle it a dozen times, then measure sag with a cable tie on the leg, aiming for around a quarter of the travel.

ABS+ damper adjustment explained
The Manitou Dorado Expert and the Comp share the ABS+ damper, a cartridge with a long record of reliability and a reputation for being easy to tune. The external adjusters are deliberately limited to the two that make the biggest difference on real ground: low speed compression and low speed rebound. There is no high speed dial to confuse the picture.
Low speed compression
Low speed compression controls how the fork responds to slow inputs: braking, weight transfer, pumping through a berm. More compression damping keeps the Manitou Dorado Expert higher in its travel under hard braking and stops the front diving into a rut. Too much and the fork feels harsh over small chatter. Start in the middle of the range and add clicks only if you feel the front sinking under braking.
Low speed rebound
Rebound sets how quickly the Manitou Dorado Expert returns after a hit. Too fast and the front kicks back at you over successive bumps, too slow and the fork packs down and runs out of travel on the third hit in a row. Push down hard on the bars and release: the fork should return to full height in one smooth movement without bouncing past it. Adjust two clicks at a time and ride the same section again.
Manitou Dorado Expert versus Dorado Comp
Manitou builds two current Dorado models on the same 37 mm chassis and the same ABS+ damper, so the decision between the Manitou Dorado Expert and the Comp comes down to the spring. The Comp is the coil sprung entry point, the Expert is the air sprung model with travel adjustment. Both are supplied with the top drop crown for electric bikes. The table sets out the differences from the Expert buyer’s point of view.
| Feature | Manitou Dorado Expert | Manitou Dorado Comp |
|---|---|---|
| Chassis | 37 mm inverted, 20 percent stiffer than the old 36 mm | Same 37 mm inverted chassis |
| Spring | Dorado Air Spring with balancing valve | Coil, XX Firm spring recommended for electric bikes |
| Travel | 180, 190 or 203 mm, adjustable without spare parts | Fixed by the fitted spring |
| Spring rate changes | Shock pump, minutes | Requires a different coil spring |
| Damper | ABS+, low speed compression and rebound | ABS+, low speed compression and rebound |
| Bleed screws | TSR on both legs | TSR on both legs |
| Crown | Top drop crown included | Top drop crown included |
| Best suited to | Riders who tune, share the bike, or switch between terrain types | Riders who want one setting that never changes |
Choose the Manitou Dorado Expert if more than one person rides the bike, if your weight in kit sits outside the range a single coil spring covers well, or if you want to move between a low trail setting and full downhill travel. The Manitou Dorado Comp is the better buy for a rider of steady weight who wants the same chassis and damper with nothing to pump and nothing to adjust between rides.
Fitment across the Talaria range
Manitou lists the Dorado Expert with the top drop crown for three Talaria models, and those are the three we sell it for. The Sting family and the XXX share the head tube, front wheel and brake architecture that the Manitou Dorado Expert was validated against.
| Talaria model | Fitment | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Talaria Sting MX3 | Yes | Direct upgrade over the standard fork, crown supplied |
| Talaria Sting R MX4 | Yes | The same Manitou Dorado Expert that Talaria fits to the MX4 Expert |
| Talaria XXX | Yes | Confirm brake adapter for your disc size before ordering |
| Talaria Komodo and Dragon | Not listed | Contact us, different front end architecture |
| Road legal L1e and L3e Sting | Physically fits | Suspension forms part of the registered specification, see FAQ |
Wheel, axle and brake
Your original front wheel and disc carry over to the Manitou Dorado Expert on its downhill thru axle, and the fork carries a post mount brake tab. Measure your disc diameter before the swap and match the calliper adapter to it, particularly on the MX4, which runs a larger front disc than the MX3. If you are also replacing the front wheel, our 19 x 1.40 front rim assembly fits every model on the list above. Leave enough brake hose slack for full extension and full lock before trimming any cable tie.

Fitting and first setup
Fitting a Manitou Dorado Expert is a half day job for a competent home mechanic with a torque wrench, a headset press and a paddock stand that lifts the front wheel. If you are not comfortable cutting a steerer or pressing a crown race, book the work with a motorcycle or downhill bike workshop, or ask us to fit the fork to a bike bought from us.
- Support the bike so the front wheel hangs free, remove the calliper, then the front wheel and the mudguard.
- Release the bar clamp, slacken the upper and lower crown pinch bolts and drop the original fork out of the head tube.
- Measure the original steerer and the stack of the original crowns, then cut the Dorado steerer to suit with the top drop crown in place.
- Fit the crown race, install the fork, set the headset preload, then torque the pinch bolts in the sequence and to the figures in Manitou’s documentation. Uneven pinch bolt torque is the usual cause of a binding inverted fork.
- Refit the wheel, set the axle and check the disc runs central in the calliper. Bed the brake in gently before riding hard.
- Set air pressure and sag, centre both damper adjusters, then ride a familiar loop and adjust two clicks at a time.
Ride height check
Because the Manitou Dorado Expert can run 180 mm to 203 mm, you are also choosing the front ride height. More travel raises the front, slackens the head angle and calms the bike at speed, at the cost of slower steering. Start at 180 mm or 190 mm and only move to 203 mm once you have a reason.
Servicing and care
The Manitou Dorado Expert wears its seals at the bottom, in the mud line, so cleaning after every wet ride is the single biggest factor in bushing life. Rinse the legs, wipe the seals with a clean cloth, cycle the fork a few times and wipe again. Never point a pressure washer at the seal lip.
Service intervals
Manitou publishes hour based intervals for a lower leg service and a full damper service. Follow the published schedule rather than a calendar, because a Talaria that sees a wet British winter accumulates riding hours faster than the owner expects. The ABS+ damper is serviceable with ordinary workshop tools, and the air spring seals are a routine part.
Symptoms to act on
- Oil weeping past a seal: the wiper needs replacing before grit follows it in.
- Loss of air pressure overnight: check the valve core first, then the air piston seal.
- Rebound that no longer responds to the dial: damper oil is due for a change.
The fork is covered by our UK warranty, full terms on the warranty page. Fitting it to a model outside the list above will complicate a claim, so check fitment before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Manitou Dorado Expert the same fork Talaria fits to the MX4 Expert?
Yes. The Sting R MX4 Expert leaves the factory with a Manitou Dorado Expert with the top drop crown, and this listing is the same fork sold separately for owners of the standard MX3, MX4 and XXX who want to upgrade. The travel, spring and damper are identical, and the setup advice on this page applies to both.
Does the Manitou Dorado come with the crown for a Talaria?
Yes. The top drop crown that Manitou recommends for electric bikes is included in the box, so there is no separate crown kit to buy. You still need to cut the steerer to suit your head tube and set the crown heights to match your original stack, which is why we recommend measuring the old fork before it comes out.
Which travel setting should I choose?
Start the Manitou Dorado Expert at 180 mm or 190 mm for general UK trail and woodland riding, where the bike stays close to its original geometry. Move to 203 mm for downhill venues, big rock gardens or jump lines where the extra stroke and slacker steering pay off. Changing travel needs no spare parts, so it costs nothing to try all three over a month.
Can I fit this fork to a road legal Sting?
Mechanically it fits the L1e and L3e Sting, but the suspension forms part of the specification the bike was registered to, so tell your insurer before making the change and keep the original fork. Rules for registered vehicles are set out by GOV.UK vehicle registration guidance, and off road models remain private land only whatever fork they wear.
How does the Expert compare with other Talaria forks on the market?
Most alternative Talaria forks are inverted units with a single spring rate and limited or no external damping adjustment. The advantages of the Manitou Dorado Expert are the 37 mm chassis stiffness, the balanced air spring, three travel settings and a damper with a long racing record. The Comp matches the chassis and damper at a lower price with a coil spring in place of the air unit.
