The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is the highest output bike we build on the Sting chassis: a 22s Molicel P45B battery running at 81.4V nominal, an EBMX X9000 V2 controller programmed in our workshop, and a peak of 23 kW at the motor. It exists for one kind of rider, the one who has already decided that a standard MX5 Pro is not enough and wants the sharpest version of the platform rather than the longest legged one.
Why the 45B exists
We build two Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione bikes and the difference between them comes down to a cell choice. The 50s version uses Samsung 50S cells and is tuned for 21 kW with the longest range the chassis can carry. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B swaps in Molicel P45B cells, which give up a little capacity in exchange for a much higher continuous discharge rating. That lets us raise the BMS ceiling to 450 A peak and lift the controller to 23 kW. The cost is roughly 10 percent less range than the 50s.
Who should choose it
If your riding is short, violent and grip limited, a practice track, a quarry, a hillclimb or a tight woodland loop where you are constantly on and off the throttle, the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is the better tool. If you ride long green lane loops on a road legal machine or want to cover distance between charges, look at the Competizione 50s instead. Both Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione builds are tuned and locked by us and sold as complete bikes rather than kits.
What it is built from
The starting point for the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is a new Talaria Sting MX5 Pro, model code TL5500. We remove the factory 72V pack and controller and fit our 22s battery, the X9000 V2 controller with the SW102 display, a regen thumb throttle, carbon effect mudguards and hugger, and our Competizione side wings. The IPM motor, reinforced gearbox, 428 chain, 220 mm brakes and revised suspension of the MX5 Pro all stay, because they were designed with headroom that the standard bike never uses.

The Molicel P45B battery in detail
The pack is the reason the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B carries its name. It contains 220 Molicel P45B cells in the 21700 format, arranged as 22 in series and 10 in parallel. Each cell is rated at 4,500 mAh nominal and 3.6V, with a 35 A maximum continuous discharge. Put together, that gives 81.4V nominal, roughly 45 Ah and around 3.6 kWh of energy, which our spec sheet expresses as 50.6 Ah equivalent at 72V so you can compare it with a standard MX5 pack.
Why Molicel for this build
The P45B is a cell built for current rather than capacity, and that single property is what makes the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B possible. With ten cells in parallel the pack can theoretically supply 350 A continuously without any single cell exceeding its rating, so a 450 A peak setting on the BMS is a short burst well inside what the chemistry tolerates. Voltage stays high under that load, which the motor turns into acceleration rather than heat. A capacity focused cell would sag harder at the same current, and sag is what you feel as a bike going flat halfway through a session.
Pack construction
- Every cell individually wrapped before assembly for added insulation.
- Layers of fibre board, Kapton tape and heat shrink around the cell block.
- A sealed stainless steel box, powder coated inside and out, for impact and water protection.
- Double 0.2 mm copper sheet on the current paths to keep resistance and heat low.
- A Bluetooth BMS that reports the condition of each series group and balances on charge. We set it and we ask you to leave it: altering the settings can invalidate the warranty.
- An integrated handle for lowering the 19.2 kg pack in and out of the frame, and an XT60 charging port.
Charging the 22s pack
Because the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B pack runs at 22s it needs a charger that terminates at 92.4V. A 6 A 22s charger is supplied with the bike and it is the only charger you should use. A standard 72V Talaria charger will not fully charge this pack and should not be connected. Our Talaria battery guide explains how series count, nominal voltage and full charge voltage relate if you want the background.
How 23 kW is delivered: the X9000 V2 controller
The EBMX X9000 power kit fitted to the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is a field oriented control unit built around 30 MOSFETs with CNC machined terminals, VESC based firmware modified by EBMX, and a 12V DC to DC converter with four configurable outputs. It is rated at 22 kW continuous, accepts 40V to 100V at the input and works across 48V to 93V, which is exactly the 22s window this battery lives in. Phase current is 1,000 A continuous and 1,500 A in bursts, with a 500 A maximum battery draw.
Why we program it ourselves
A controller with that much headroom can destroy a motor or a gearbox if it is set carelessly. We map the throttle, phase current and battery current limits in house, then ride the bike hard before it leaves, so that 23 kW arrives as a smooth, predictable surge rather than a spike. When people search for Talaria MX5 kW ratings they usually find a bare controller number; on the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B the number that matters is what we have allowed through, and it has been chosen with the P45B pack’s 450 A ceiling in mind.
What you do not get
We do not supply the Bluetooth dongle or access to the EBMX app. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is sold as a finished motorcycle with settings locked, in the same way a standard Talaria arrives without a tuning interface, and our UK warranty depends on those settings staying as delivered. Regen is variable from the thumb throttle, which adds a second way to slow the bike and puts a little energy back into the pack on descents. Waterproofing is rated IP67 and the heatsink is air cooled and finished in black.

Hardening the chassis for the power
Twenty three kilowatts through the 76 kg Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is a serious load on every mechanical part behind the motor, and the MX5 Pro base was chosen because Talaria designed it with that in mind. The rear swingarm is reinforced, the gearbox and its mounts were redesigned to handle greater output, and the final drive is a heavy duty 428 chain on a 48 tooth sprocket rather than the 420 chain used on the MX4.
Brakes and suspension
Braking on the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is by larger MX style calipers with oversized pads, roughly twice the area of the MX4’s, on 3 mm thick discs, with a DOT fluid system chosen for its heat tolerance. Suspension is the MX5 Pro’s revised front and rear setup with adjustable compression, rebound and preload. A bike that accelerates this hard needs to sit correctly under power, so we set the rear preload for the rider at handover.
Motor and cooling
The IPM motor uses a larger stator and rotor than earlier Talaria units, better magnet retention and revised air cooling, and runs at around 95 percent efficiency. It uses a magnetic encoder in place of hall sensors, removing what was historically the weakest part of small electric dirt bike motors. Higher efficiency is not just a range figure: less energy lost as heat means the motor in the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B stays cooler at 23 kW than an older design would at 15 kW.
Finish and detail
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is meant to look like what it is. Carbon effect mudguards and hugger replace the standard plastics, the side wings carry the Competizione mark, footpegs are CNC machined and anodised black, and the wheels are thick CNC units with straight pull spokes. The seat is thicker than the MX4’s with improved padding, which you notice on a full session rather than a five minute blast. A headlight and taillight switch lets you run dark on the track.
Power modes: Road and Race with three levels each
On the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B the SW102 display offers two modes, Road and Race, each with three power levels. We cannot rename them, so read Road as green lane style riding with open straights and Race as tight, technical, grip limited terrain. Level 3 is highest in both modes and is where the full 23 kW lives.
| Mode and level | Character | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Road 3 | Maximum top speed, full power, linear delivery | Open straights above half charge, full throttle in bursts of up to 60 seconds |
| Road 2 | Strong, controllable, best balance of pace and range | Our default for a long loop with mixed terrain |
| Road 1 | Power capped at 6 kW | Getting home on a low pack |
| Race 3 | Maximum acceleration with very high phase current, top speed capped at 60 mph | Grippy, technical track where you are on and off the throttle constantly |
| Race 2 | Slightly softer than Race 3, better range | Mixed grip where Race 3 spins the rear too readily |
| Race 1 | Still quick, mildest of the Race maps | Poor grip, wet rock, deep mud |
The 60 second rule
In Level 3 of either mode the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B should be held at full throttle for no more than about 60 seconds at a time, and ideally with the pack above 81V, which is roughly half charge. This is not a weakness in the build. No petrol bike is held at the rev limiter for minutes on end either. Back off, let the motor and controller shed heat, and reapply. Less throttle also means more range, which matters on a pack that has traded some capacity for current.
Top speed
In Road 3 the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B will reach around 70 mph depending on rider weight, tyres and surface. Race mode caps speed at 60 mph so the available current goes into leaving corners rather than chasing a number. Whichever mode you use, this bike is off road only, so those speeds belong on private land and closed courses. Our post on Talaria MX5 top speed explains how standard and tuned MX5 figures relate.

Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B compared with the 50s
Three bikes, one chassis: the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B, the Competizione 50s and the standard bike they both start from. The table below uses only figures from our build sheets and Talaria’s published MX5 specification.
| Item | Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B | Competizione 50s | Standard MX5 Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cells | 220 x Molicel P45B, 21700 | 220 x Samsung 50S, 21700 | Samsung 50S |
| Configuration | 22s10p, 81.4V nominal | 22s10p, 81.4V nominal | 72V 40Ah |
| Energy | About 3.6 kWh, 50.6 Ah at 72V equivalent | 4,060 Wh, 55 Ah at 72V equivalent | 2,880 Wh |
| BMS peak | 450 A | 400 A | Factory |
| Peak power | 23 kW | 21 kW | 13.4 kW unrestricted |
| Controller | EBMX X9000 V2, tuned and locked by us | EBMX X9000 V2, tuned and locked by us | Talaria FOC |
| Modes | Road and Race, 3 levels each | Road and Race, 3 levels each | Eco, Sport, Hyper |
| Range against the 50s | About 10 percent less | Longest of the three | 100 km at 25 km/h |
| Charger | 6 A 22s, 92.4V | 6 A 22s, 92.4V | 72V Talaria |
| Battery weight | 19.2 kg | 19.2 kg | Factory pack |
The pattern is clear. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is the acceleration bike, the 50s is the range bike, and the standard Talaria Sting MX5 Pro is the sensible starting point that most riders should own for a season before deciding whether they want either.
Living with 23 kW: charging, heat and where to ride
Ownership of a Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B asks a little more than a stock bike, mostly in the form of discipline.
Charging routine
Let the pack cool for half an hour after a hard session before connecting the 6 A 22s charger. Charge on a hard floor in a dry, ventilated space. For storage of more than a couple of weeks, leave the pack around half charge rather than full or empty. The BMS balances the 22 series groups on every charge, and a full charge once in a while helps it do that job. Treat the charger as part of the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B rather than an accessory, and keep it with the bike.
Heat management
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B heatsink is air cooled and relies on airflow. Mud packed around the heatsink or the motor fins holds heat in, so wash the bike after wet rides and check the fins. If the bike feels like it is softening after a long Level 3 pull, that is the protection doing its job. Drop to Level 2 for a lap and let everything cool.
Where you can ride it
With no road homologation, no lighting approval and no registration, the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is an off road machine. It cannot be ridden on any public road, byway, bridleway, footpath or pavement in the UK. Private land with the landowner’s permission, practice tracks and organised events are where it belongs. Clubs affiliated to the Auto Cycle Union run suitable venues, and the Motorcycle Industry Association publishes clear guidance on the difference between road legal and off road vehicles. If you want a Sting you can ride to the trail, our road legal Talaria range covers the L1e and L3e models.
Warranty and delivery
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is covered by our UK warranty, full terms on the warranty page, on the condition that the controller and BMS settings are left as delivered. It ships fully built with UK mainland delivery, timescales confirmed at checkout, and finance is available through our Talaria finance page. Used lithium packs should eventually be recycled through a proper scheme; GOV.UK battery guidance explains the rules.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it called the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B?
It refers to the Molicel P45B cell used in the battery. The pack holds 220 of these 21700 cells in a 22s10p layout, giving 81.4V nominal and about 45 Ah. The 50s sister bike uses Samsung 50S cells instead, which hold more energy but support a lower peak current.
Is 23 kW usable on a bike this light?
Yes, because it is mapped rather than dumped. The controller is programmed for a smooth, predictable rise, and the six presets let you choose how much of it you want. Race 3 is genuinely aggressive and suits grippy technical ground. Road 2 is where most riders spend most of their time.
How much range do I lose against the Competizione 50s?
Roughly 10 percent, because the P45B cell stores a little less energy than the 50S. In exchange the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B pack supports a 450 A BMS peak rather than 400 A and an extra 2 kW at the top end. Real range on either bike depends far more on the mode you choose and how hard you ride.
Can I use the EBMX app to change the settings?
No. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B is supplied without the Bluetooth dongle and the settings are locked. We sell it as a finished motorcycle with a warranty, not as a kit, and the warranty depends on the controller and BMS being left as we set them. The bike has been tuned and tested so that it simply needs riding.
Can I charge it with my existing Talaria charger?
No. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B pack is 22s and needs a charger that terminates at 92.4V. A 6 A 22s charger is supplied and is the only charger that should be connected. A 72V Talaria charger will not fully charge the pack and must not be used with it.
Is the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 45B road legal?
No. It is an off road bike only, with no homologation, registration or road lighting approval. It must not be used on public roads, byways, bridleways, footpaths or pavements. Ride it on private land with permission, at practice tracks or at organised events.
