Every Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s leaves our workshop with the same six power presets, tuned by us and locked, and a 4,060 Wh Samsung 50S battery running at 81.4V. That combination is deliberate. Rather than chase the last kilowatt, this build is about a controller map that stays civil at 21 kW and a pack big enough to let you use it for a whole day. This page explains the tuning first, because that is what you feel, and the battery second, because that is what lets you keep feeling it.
The tuning philosophy behind the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s
A controller with 22 kW of continuous capability can be programmed to do almost anything, and most of the wrong things are easy. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s approach is to decide in advance what the bike is for and map every preset around that decision. This one is for riders who cover ground: long private estates, all day practice sessions, and for those with the road legal MX5 version, green lane loops where the pack needs to last. So the maps favour a linear throttle, predictable torque at part throttle and range preservation everywhere except the top preset.
Tuned and locked, on purpose
We program the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s controller in house, ride the bike hard, adjust, ride again, and only then lock the settings. The Bluetooth dongle and the EBMX app are not supplied. That is not us hiding anything; it is the same relationship you have with a standard Talaria, which arrives with no tuning interface either. It also lets us stand behind the bike with our UK warranty, full terms on the warranty page, because we know exactly how it is set up.
Why a well mapped 21 kW beats a raw number
Talaria MX5 power figures are often quoted as a single peak, but the peak tells you very little about how the bike leaves a corner in the wet. What matters is the shape of the curve from a closed throttle to a quarter open, and how phase current is limited so the rear tyre spins up progressively rather than instantly. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s is mapped so that its 21 kW feels bigger than it is on grip and smaller than it is on mud, which is exactly the behaviour you want.

The six presets explained
The SW102 display gives you two modes, Road and Race, and three levels within each. Level 3 is the highest. We cannot rename the modes, so think of Road as open ground with long straights and Race as tight, technical, grip limited terrain. Here is how we set each one on the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s.
Road mode
- Road 3 delivers the full 21 kW with a linear rise and unlocked top speed of around 70 mph depending on rider weight, tyres and surface. Use it above half charge, roughly 81V on the display, and hold full throttle for no more than about 60 seconds at a time.
- Road 2 is our favourite. Strong, responsive, still genuinely fast, and the best compromise between pace and range. This is the map we use for a long loop.
- Road 1 caps output at 6 kW. It will not excite you, but it will squeeze every last watt hour out of a low pack and get you home rather than pushing.
Race mode
- Race 3 is maximum acceleration with very high phase current and a top speed cap of 60 mph, so all the available current goes into leaving corners. It suits quick riding on true off road terrain with grip. In deep mud it will simply spin.
- Race 2 is a little more forgiving and better on range, but still seriously quick. On decent grip it launches; in heavy mud you will still light the rear.
- Race 1 is the mildest of the Race maps and still no slouch. It is for poor grip with patches of traction. If you are still slipping here, Road 2 with its gentler ramp is the better choice.
Reading the display
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s SW102 runs custom EBMX firmware and shows speed, battery capacity and mode. Use the voltage reading as your fuel gauge: full is 92.4V, half is around 81V, and the presets that draw the most current are happiest above that line. Regen is variable from the thumb throttle, which gives you a second brake and a little energy back on descents.
The 50s long range battery
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s takes its name from the Samsung 50S 21700 cell. The pack uses 220 of them in a 22s10p arrangement: 22 groups in series for 81.4V nominal and 10 cells in parallel for 50 Ah. That works out at 4,060 Wh, which our build sheet expresses as 55 Ah at 72V equivalent so that MX5 owners can compare it with the factory pack. Weight is 19.2 kg, with an integrated handle for lifting it in and out.
Cell specification
- Samsung 50S, 21700 format, INR chemistry.
- 5,000 mAh nominal capacity, 3.6V nominal.
- 35 A maximum continuous discharge per cell.
- 21.1 mm by 70.4 mm, unprotected cells managed by the pack BMS.
Protection and the BMS
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s BMS is set to 400 A peak with full protection against over discharge, short circuit and over temperature. It is a Bluetooth unit that reports each series group and balances on charge, and we ask that its settings are left as delivered. Around the cells sit individual wraps, fibre board, Kapton tape and heat shrink, all inside a sealed stainless steel box that is powder coated inside and out. Current paths use double 0.2 mm copper sheet to keep resistance low and the pack cool.
Why more energy also means more power
People assume the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s is only about distance, but a larger pack at a higher voltage sags less under load. The motor spins faster and harder and runs cooler because it is not fighting a falling voltage. So the range battery is also, quietly, a performance battery. Our Talaria battery guide explains voltage sag and why watt hours are the number to compare.

Controller hardware: what the X9000 V2 brings
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s controller is the EBMX X9000 power kit in its V2 form. Rated at 22 kW continuous, it accepts 40V to 100V and operates between 48V and 93V, which matches the 22s pack exactly. Phase current is 1,000 A continuous with 1,500 A bursts, maximum battery current is 500 A, and motor control is field oriented, running VESC based firmware that EBMX has modified. Inside are 30 MOSFETs, CNC machined terminals, a 12V DC to DC converter with four configurable outputs and CAN bus readiness.
Fitment on the Sting
The kit ships with a harness for the Talaria Sting, the SW102 display, a regen thumb throttle and an air cooled heatsink in black. The unit is IP67 rated and operates from minus 25 to 80 degrees Celsius. We fit our custom Competizione side wings around it, which is partly a visual signature and partly airflow.
Motor pairing
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s keeps the MX5 Pro IPM motor, which has a larger stator and rotor than earlier Talaria motors, revised air cooling and about 95 percent efficiency. A magnetic encoder replaces the hall sensors that used to be the weak point of these motors. The X9000 V2 exploits that: field oriented control with a clean position signal is what makes the smooth part throttle behaviour possible.
What changes on the bike, and what stays MX5 Pro
Everything that makes the MX5 Pro strong is retained on the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s. The reinforced rear swingarm, the redesigned gearbox and mounts, the 428 chain that replaced the MX4’s 420, the 48 tooth sprocket, the larger MX style calipers with pads almost twice the size of the MX4’s on 3 mm discs, and the DOT fluid brake system. Suspension is the MX5 Pro’s own setup, adjustable for compression, rebound and preload. The seat is thicker, the footpegs are CNC machined and black, and the wheels are thick CNC units with straight pull spokes.
What we add
- The 22s 50s battery and its 6 A 92.4V charger.
- EBMX X9000 V2 controller, SW102 display and regen thumb throttle.
- Carbon effect hard wearing mudguards and hugger.
- Competizione side wings.
- Our six preset controller map, tuned and locked.
What we deliberately leave alone
We do not touch the gearbox ratio, the sprocket, the brakes or the suspension internals. Talaria engineered those for the MX5 Pro with headroom, and the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s uses that headroom rather than exceeding it. If you want to know what the base bike offers before our work begins, read the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro page.

Choosing between the two Competizione builds
The Competizione 45B uses Molicel P45B cells, a 450 A BMS and a 23 kW map. It gives up roughly 10 percent of range for that extra 2 kW and a harder hit off the bottom. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s keeps 400 A and 21 kW and carries the most energy this chassis can hold.
Pick the 50s if
- Your rides are measured in hours rather than laps.
- You want the most predictable part throttle behaviour on mixed grip.
- You would rather finish the day with charge to spare than win the first corner.
Pick the 45B if
- Your riding is short, intense and grip rich, like a practice track or hillclimb.
- You care about the launch more than the distance.
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s and the 45B share the same chassis, brakes, controller hardware and mode structure, so a rider can swap between them without relearning anything. The difference is a battery chemistry and a map.
Riding, charging and ownership
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s is an off road motorcycle. It has no homologation, no road lighting approval and no registration, and it cannot be used on any public road, byway, bridleway, footpath or pavement in the UK. Ride it on private land with the landowner’s permission, at practice tracks or at organised events run by clubs affiliated to the Auto Cycle Union. Riders who want a Sting for green lanes should look at our road legal Talaria models instead.
Charging habits
The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s uses only the supplied 6 A 22s charger, which terminates at 92.4V. Let the pack cool before charging after a hard session, charge in a dry ventilated space on a hard floor, and store the bike at around half charge if it will sit for more than a couple of weeks. A full charge from time to time lets the BMS balance all 22 groups. Our Talaria charger guide covers the reasoning.
Heat and the 60 second guideline
In Level 3 of either mode, the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s is happiest with full throttle used in bursts of up to about 60 seconds, then eased off. The controller and motor shed heat quickly through their fins provided they are not caked in mud, so wash the bike after wet rides. If output softens after a long pull, that is thermal protection working as intended, and a lap in Level 2 restores it.

Frequently asked questions
Why is it called the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s?
The 50s refers to the Samsung 50S 21700 cell inside the battery. Two hundred and twenty of them in a 22s10p layout give 81.4V nominal, 50 Ah and 4,060 Wh. The Competizione name covers our complete build: battery, EBMX X9000 V2 controller, in house map, carbon effect bodywork and side wings.
How far will the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s go on a charge?
Further than any other bike we build on the Sting chassis, but the honest answer depends on the preset. Road 2 on mixed terrain gives a long day; Race 3 on a grippy track uses energy quickly. The 4,060 Wh pack holds about 40 percent more energy than the factory MX5 Pro battery, which is the best guide to how the two compare.
Can I change the controller map myself?
No. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s settings are tuned and locked by us, and the Bluetooth dongle and EBMX app are not included. The bike is sold as a finished motorcycle rather than a kit, and our warranty depends on the controller and BMS staying as delivered. The six presets cover everything from getting home at 6 kW to full 21 kW.
What is the Talaria MX5 power increase over a standard MX5 Pro?
The factory MX5 Pro is rated at 13.4 kW peak unrestricted. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s is mapped to 21 kW, delivered through an EBMX X9000 V2 controller from an 81.4V pack. The increase is felt most in mid range pull and in how little the bike slows as the battery empties, rather than only as a higher top speed.
Does the Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s need a special charger?
Yes. It is a 22s pack that charges to 92.4V, and a 6 A 22s charger is supplied. A standard 72V Talaria charger will not fully charge it and must not be connected. Charge in a dry space, let the pack cool first after hard riding and store around half charge for longer breaks.
Is this bike legal on UK roads?
No. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s is off road only. It has no homologation, lighting approval or registration and cannot be ridden on public roads, byways, bridleways, footpaths or pavements. Private land with permission, practice tracks and organised events are the places to use it.
How does it differ from the Competizione 45B?
The 45B uses Molicel P45B cells with a 450 A BMS and a 23 kW map, trading roughly 10 percent of range for a harder launch. The Talaria Sting MX5 Pro Competizione 50s uses Samsung 50S cells with a 400 A BMS and 21 kW, and carries the most energy. Chassis, brakes, controller hardware and presets are otherwise identical.
